Install XMMS on Ubuntu 8.04 / 8.10 / 9.04 / 9.10 / 10.04
XMMS has been removed from the Ubuntu repositories, but some of us like to keep things 'Old Skool' and as lightweight as possible. This guide will show you how to install XMMS.
Thanks go to Knut Auvor Grythe for his guide and repository.
This guide follows Knut's but add's a menu entry and logo for XMMS.
------------------------------------------------------
I'll be using the following during this guide:
User - administrator
Home Directory - /home/administrator
Machine name - CSUBUNTU04
Distro - Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope
Gnome - 2.26.1
Please adjust according to your needs / credentials.
Firstly you will need to add the XMMS repository.
Open a terminal and type the following:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
At the end of the file add the relevant two lines from bellow:
##Ubuntu Hardy 32- and 64-bit x86
deb http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~knuta/xmms/hardy ./
deb-src http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~knuta/xmms/hardy ./
##Ubuntu Jaunty 32- and 64-bit x86
deb http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~knuta/xmms/jaunty ./
deb-src http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~knuta/xmms/jaunty ./
##Ubuntu Karmic 32- and 64-bit x86
deb http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~knuta/xmms/karmic ./
deb-src http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~knuta/xmms/karmic ./
Now close and save the text file.

In the terminal again type the following:
sudo apt-get update
This will update the repository information on your machine.

To install XMMS type the following in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install xmms
As long as you receive no errors messages XMMS will now be installed and can be run by entering
xmms
Should you wish to add and entry to the menu in Ubuntu you will need to do the following:
In the terminal type the following:
wget http://tombott.com/images/xmms/xmms_logo.png
sudo cp ~/xmms_logo.png /usr/share/pixmaps
This downloads a logo for XMMS and copies to the /usr/share/pixmaps folder on your Ubuntu install.
To add the menu entry type the following into the terminal:
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/xmms.desktop
Now in the text window that opens paste the following text:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=XMMS
Comment=X Multimedia System
Exec=/usr/bin/xmms
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/xmms_logo.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;AudioVideo;
You should now have an entry for XMMS under Applications - Sounds and Video.
![]()
You may need to change your default sound device in XMMS upon first run.
![]()
Open XMMS, right-click where it says 'X MUTLIMEDIA SYSTEM' and goto Options - Preferences.
![]()
On the Audio I/OP Plugins Screen change the Output plugin to ALSA.

If you want to Scrobble your tracks to Last.fm you can download the plugin from Ubuntu here

Thank you so Much.

PPA for Lucid/GTK1
Not meaning to spam, but I thought this would be of interest:
I've set up a PPA for Lucid, rebuilding Knut's XMMS package and xmms-alarm (note: packages depending on xmms to build won't work with Knut's version of xmms); I also have a few other old GTK1.2 programs.
Use add-apt-repository / Software Properties or manually add these two PPAs:
ppa:ibid-ag/oldgtk1 (deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ibid-ag/oldgtk1/ubuntu lucid main)
Depends on
ppa:adamkoczur/gtk1.2 (deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/adamkoczur/gtk1.2/ubuntu lucid main)

thx
Many thanks for instructions. Thats works. Great job! Thanks!

XMMS on Asus EEE PC 901 and Ubuntu 10.04, plays fine.
I just installed XMMS on Ubuntu 10.04. I simply used what was available for karmic and hoped the best. Obviously I succeeded and I am happy about it.
xmms on 10.04 LTS
Big Thanks. I have used Xmms for about 10 years and still love it because of its charm and simplicity. Your instructions are easy to follow and it works well in the latest Ubuntu 10.04 LTS!

XMMS on Lucid
I tried the above on Lucid i386 and it worked but it crashed on "control D". I then did sudo apt-get remove XMMS and installed the old deb I used on hardy. It worked a treat and works on control D just fine. After google searching I see others have done the same.
