Ubuntu 9.04 - Show Home, Computer, Network and Trash Icons on the Desktop
This guide will show you how show / hide the Home, Computer, Network and Trash icons on the desktop of the Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) operating system.
I'll be using the following during this guide:
User - tomb
Home Directory - /home/tomb
Machine name - tomb-acer
Ubuntu Version - 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
Desktop Environment - Gnome 2.26.1
Please adjust according to your needs / credentials.
The default desktop has no icons, except when a USB drive / CD-ROM etc is present.
![]()
This does give the desktop a nice clean feel, but many people (myself included) like to have shortcuts to various folders.
You can create your own links, but there are some pre-set shortcuts set-up already, and you just need to enable them.
Right click on the Ubuntu Menu:
![]()
Click on 'System Tools' in the lefthand navigation window, then select 'Configuration Editor' on the righthand side.
Click close. Now navigate to the following:
Applications - System Tools - Configuration Editor
Now navigate to the following:
Apps - nautilus - desktop
In the right hand window, click the icons you wish to be displayed on your desktop
![]()
Close the Configuration Editor.
