Ubuntu 10.04 - Lucid Lynx (LTS) Auto Updates
This guide will show you how install updates on the Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) operating system
I'll be using the following during this guide:
User - tomb
Home Directory - /home/tomb
Machine name - tomb-laptop
Ubuntu Version - 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)
Desktop Environment - Gnome 2.30
Please adjust according to your needs / credentials.
Upon logging into your system open the 'Update Manager'
System - Administration - Update Manager
The following should now appear:

By default Ubuntu will only notify you of any updates that are available, and will only show you Long Term Support Releases.

To change this click 'Download all updates in the background' and change 'Show new distribution releases' to 'Normal releases'

The next step is optional but is always something I enable as it enables you to install older archived packages.
Click the 'Other Software' tab and then tick:
http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner
The final step is to check which server you are set to download updates and packages from.
Click on the 'Ubuntu Software' tab and choose your nearest download server from the dropdown list:

Now click on the 'Close' button.
You should now be prompted to reload the information about available software. Click 'Reload'

Update Manager will now dowload upto date package information:

Once Update Manager has download the upto date package information, you will be shown all the available updates for your system.
To install these updates click on 'Install Updates'

You should now see a progress box appear:

Clicking on the '+' will show more detail:

Once the downloads are complete Update Manager will proceed to install the updates it has downloaded:

Again cicking the '+' will show more detail:

As I had made changes to Update manager the following appeared:

I choose 'Keep' if I had chosen 'Replace' all of the settings I changed earlier would be reset to defaults.
Once the updates are complete you will be prompted to restart your computer:

Your computer is now configured to download updates automatically, but you will still have to authorise the installation of updates.
